Chemistry – Analysing Caffeine

Maximum Number of Students

25

Duration

1 Day 9:30 – 2:30

Curriculum Areas

VCE Chemistry

Description

Students analyse caffeine content in various drinks using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). After preparing caffeine standards with micropipettes, they run samples through HPLC, interpret chromatograms, and determine concentrations. Students learn chromatography principles, HPLC function, and use Excel for calibration curves, gaining practical laboratory skills applicable across industries.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the molecular structure and properties of caffeine
  • Learn and apply the principles of chromatography
  • Use micropipettes to accurately prepare chemical standards
  • Operate and comprehend the function of HPLC instruments
  • Interpret chromatographic data to construct calibration curves and determine concentrations

Career Paths

  • Analytical chemist
  • Pharmaceutical chemist
  • Laboratory technician
  • Formulation chemist
